Salt Awareness Week 2014 - Switch the Salt!

CASH have long been pushing for more consistent front of pack food labelling.  In 2014 our attention will be focused on the need for better labelling; congratulating those that have signed up to the Department of Health’s new front of pack labelling scheme, and encouraging others to follow suit.  The theme aims to show that there are options for consumers that want ‘less salt please!’, and to make it easier to choose them.

The new recommended front of pack labelling scheme will provide clear guidelines for a consistent front of pack label.  The new scheme has lower thresholds for salt, at 30% Reference Intake, to bring it in line with the other nutrients.  The Department of Health has stressed the importance of communicating this clearly to consumers hence we hope this proposed topic will be relevant to both consumers, health professionals and the food industry alike.

As usual our campaign will also focus on how important it is for individuals to take personal responsibility for their long term health and highlighting steps that they can take to reduce their salt intake, including checking labels, identifying high salt ingredients and cooking more food at home.

As part of the Week we will also have a national media campaign and a Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons on Wednesday 12th March 2012 from 4-6pm.  The event is usually well attended with delegates from the Department of Health, NGOs, the food industry, as well as featured speeches from high profile guests.
