Beware of soups still high in salt

CASH surveyed 576 soups from January to April 2007 and found that many soups were still high in salt despite supermarket own-label products and brands reducing the amount of salt used. We recommend that you do not eat soups that are over 1.2g of salt per portion which is 20% of your recommended maximum daily intake of 6g.

information on salt per portion can be found on the label of most manufacturers. Where only sodium is labelled you need to multiply this by 2.5. It's worth bearing in mind that often a recommended portion is just half a tin and therefore for most of us who will eat a whole tin of soup for lunch we will have to double the salt per portion provided.

Click on the link below for a list of products that we found to contain 1.2g of salt or less per portion. We couldn't look at every soup available so if your favourite is not on the list then do check the label.

Soups are continually being reformulated so please do continue to check your favourite soups' label and if it's not below 1.2g of salt per portion do write to the company and ask them to reduce their salt.

Please note we have not compared soups for calories, fat or sugar content.
