Beware of soups still high in salt
CASH surveyed 576 soups from January to April 2007 and found that many soups were still high in salt despite supermarket own-label products and brands reducing the amount of salt used. We recommend that adults do not eat soups that are over 1.2g of salt per portion which is 20% of the recommended maximum daily intake of 6g.
It's worth bearing in mind that often a recommended portion is just half a tin and many people will eat a whole tin of soup for lunch in which case they will have to double the salt per portion provided. Additionally, once bread or a sandwich is added to the meal occassion this can quickly add up to a lot of salt.
Click on the link below for a list of products that we found to contain 1.2g of salt or less per portion. We couldn't look at every soup available so if your favourite is not on the list then do check the label.
Soups are continually being reformulated so please do ask your patients to continue to check thier favourite soups' label and if it's not below 1.2g of salt per portion ask them to write to the company requesting the salt is reduced.
Please note we have not compared soups for calories, fat or sugar content.
