Action on Salt

How it Works

With so many brands of packaged food and drink available in supermarkets, choosing which one to buy can sometimes be overwhelming and these products are often surprisingly high in salt, added sugars, saturated fat (saturates) and calories. With FoodSwitch UK, making healthier choices is made easier.

FoodSwitch UK has a database of over 100,000 packaged food and drink products available in the UK. By simply scanning the barcode of a product, you can see what is in the food you are eating and find healthier yet similar alternatives, helping you to reduce excessive levels of fat, salt, sugar and calories in your diet and make better food choices for you and your family.

Select

FoodSwitch UK comes with handy filters to suit different needs:

FoodSwitch – great for people looking to make overall healthier food choices
SaltSwitch – great for people with, or being treated for, high blood pressure
FatSwitch – great for people looking for products lower in saturates
EnergySwitch – great for people looking for products lower in kilojoules/calories
SugarSwitch – great for people looking for products lower in total sugar

Scan

Use the app to scan the barcode of packaged food and drink products with your smartphone camera to get easy-to-interpret nutritional information, with colour-coded ratings for four key food components (total fat, saturates, sugars and salt) so that you can see at a glance how healthy the product is.

Switch

When you scan a food or drink product, colour-coded nutrition information will be displayed on a per serving basis. You'll also get a list of healthier choices that you can switch to from the same category.

No matter which filter you are using, healthier choices are identified by comparing the overall nutritional value of foods based on the Health Star Rating nutrient profiling system, which takes into account a number of factors important to general health, including the energy, saturates, sugars, salt, protein, fibre, and fruit, vegetable, nut and legume (FVNL) content.

If you’re using SaltSwitch, FatSwitch, EnergySwitch or SugarSwitch filters, the healthier choices will also have a lower amount of the relevant nutrient (salt, saturates, calories or sugar) per 100g than the product you scanned.

What do the colour ratings mean?

Each product in our database has been rated for 4 food components: total fat, saturated fat (saturates), sugars and salt, and colour coded based on a set of criteria developed by the Department of Health.

Indicates that a product contains low amounts of this nutrient. The more green circles, the healthier the choice
Indicates that a product contains medium amounts of this nutrient, so it's an OK choice most of the time
Indicates that a product contains high amounts of this nutrient and is a less healthy choice, so should be consumed only once in a while.
