Action on Salt

New research paper published highlights misleading cardiovascular associations drawn from sodium intake formulas

This month our research paper titled, 'Formulas to Estimate Dietary Sodium Intake From Spot Urine Lead to Misleading Associations with Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Mortality', was published in the Journal of Hypertension.

Published:

The paper examines the reliability of the current formulas being used to estimate daily salt intake. Analysing data from over 435,000 participants alongside 3 popular salt estimation formulas, the research paper highlights the misleading and inaccurate health associations these measures form.

Accurately understanding the impact of salt on health is vital to create effective dietary guidelines and public health policies. The inaccurate data that is generated from these formulas can potentially fuel misinformed salt reduction debates and cause misleading health conclusions that delay and undermine the salt reduction policies which are vital to preventing cardiovascular disease and deaths.
